Traffic was blocked for at least a mile and police said drivers should avoid the area if possible.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation said there have been six accidents at toll booths in the state in the past three months.

“It's not a snow event. The roads are clear and dry and it's about speed or distracted driving or sometimes distracted or impaired driving, and that's very concerning,” said Richard Arcand of NHDOT.

The state has eliminated some of its toll plazas elsewhere in the state and there are plans to do the same in Bedford.
