Car catches fire in Boston tunnel one day after several vehicles catch fire nearby

Massachusetts State Police officials said troopers responded to a car fire Saturday morning in the Interstate 90 connector tunnel, not far from where several vehicles caught fire less than 20 hours ago. and no injuries were reported. This car fire comes after several vehicles caught fire inside the tunnel ramp approaching the east side of the Ted Williams Tunnel Friday afternoon.

The Boston Fire Department said that shortly after 4 p.m. Friday, firefighters responded to a fire involving three vehicles involved in a crash inside the tunnel connecting Interstate 93 north to the eastbound side of the highway in Massachusetts toll booth, just before the Ted Williams Tunnel.

A photo from Friday's incident shared by a WCVB Channel 5 viewer showed at least one vehicle engulfed in flames with smoke billowing up to the roof of the tunnel ramp.

State police said several people got out of their vehicles and ran away, leading to other cars burning.

“We heard a lot of bangs,” said Shaunna Lai, who was on her way to Logan Airport. “The next thing we know, we see … people running towards us from their cars and saying, 'Get out, get out of here, get out of here' and screaming.”

Lai said she and her family came out of the tunnel and then saw other people running before the tunnel became dark from what appeared to be smoke.

Deputy Fire Chief James Greene said six people were inside the vehicles that caught fire and three of them were transported to Boston-area hospitals.
