Cameron Gardens Volunteer Fire Department Celebrates 50th Anniversary

WICHITA COUNTY (KFDX/KJTL) — From its humble beginnings with custom-built fire trucks to the fire department it is today, the Cameron Gardens Volunteer Fire Department has come a long way path.

But it's still a volunteer fire department, which Deputy Chief Brad Russell says strengthens the connection between the firehouse and the community it serves.

“It’s definitely about service. You know, it feels good to be here helping people that I know, some people that I grew up with,” Russell said. “And I enjoy the fire department. It’s very rewarding. There’s so many things that I enjoy, the friends that I make, the relationships, and it all goes a long way.”

Over the 50-year history of the fire department, many firefighters have come and gone. What made this 50th anniversary so special was the recognition of two firefighters who have been a part of history since the very beginning. A level of commitment rarely seen in a profession.

“Being a firefighter or a first responder is definitely not for everyone,” Russell said. “But you find people who really have the motivation and the desire to continue doing it, and that’s what makes it sustainable.”

For the Cameron Gardens VFD, its first big challenge as it enters its 51st year will be July 4th.

“We always look forward to the Fourth of July,” Russell said. “We usually have a little get-together here and we usually have to run to a few little fires, which is nice. That’s what we’re here for, to serve the community. So, yeah, it’s great. It’s our favorite time of year.”

They hope to serve on July 4th for the next 50 years.
