Authorities arrested two 16-year-old boys who led detectives on a high-speed chase that ended Tuesday afternoon with a crash and car fire on a busy stretch of Interstate 50 in Sacramento, officials said. Sheriff’s officials said.

Investigators recovered three guns at the crash scene after the two teens exhibited “totally reckless behavior,” livestreaming themselves on Instagram during the chase, the sergeant said. Amar Gandhi, spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.

Gandhi said gang enforcement detectives from the Sheriff's Office were on a “proactive patrol” around 3:30 p.m. near Broadway and 37th Street in the North Oak Park neighborhood of Sacramento when they attempted to stopping a vehicle with an equipment violation, also known as a non-violation. moving vehicle code violation.

The car, a silver sedan that was not reported stolen, failed to stop and led detectives on a high-speed chase that lasted about 10 minutes, Gandhi said.

The fleeing car struck two other vehicles along the way, Gandhi said, before the chase ended on the WX portion of Highway 50 near Fifth and Interstate 5. He said the silver car was left behind, engulfed in flames on the path. highway as the two teens fled, jumping approximately 15 to 20 feet off a highway embankment before being captured a short time later.

The car caught fire after the crash on the highway, but it's unclear what exactly started the fire in the car, Gandhi said.

The sheriff's spokesperson said the two teens were “confirmed gang members,” one of whom was arrested for leading authorities on a chase a few months ago. The sheriff's office has not released the names of the arrested teens because they are minors.

Gandhi said the teens would be medically examined to ensure they were not injured before being booked into Sacramento County Juvenile Hall on charges of illegal firearm possession and felony evading police.

“They want to continue talking about these still violations and why we are doing them,” Gandhi told reporters Tuesday. “That’s why we arrest these people. They are dangerous people, and who knows what they would do now.

He said “surprisingly” no injuries were reported, including the teens in the fleeing car.

“They were live on Instagram as they pursued this quest,” Gandhi said. “That’s how seriously they didn’t take it.” For them, it was just a real video game.
