A suicidal man who stabbed himself in Jurupa Valley then advanced toward a Riverside County sheriff's deputy who was trying to treat him, prompting the deputy to shoot and injure the man on Saturday June 8, the sheriff's department said.

The suspect was in critical condition, said Lt. Deirdre Vickers, a sheriff's spokeswoman. No deputies were injured.

The standoff began around 11:12 a.m. when officers were dispatched to 53rd and Cedar streets to check on a man who appeared bleeding and disoriented.

“Upon arrival, officers contacted the man and began providing him with medical aid. As the deputy tended to the man's medical needs, he pulled out a knife and began stabbing himself. The man charged toward the deputy with the knife and (the deputy shot him),” the sheriff’s press release states.
