June 1—Cal Fire will begin two weeks of nighttime helicopter training flights around Lake Berryessa in Napa County on Sunday, the state fire agency announced.

The aerial training, which will also take place near Davis Creek Reservoir in Yolo County, will continue through June 16, according to a news release from Cal Fire's aviation program.

The flights aim to train pilots and crew members in navigation, communication and coordination between aircraft at night and in reduced visibility. Crews will simulate real-world scenarios involving water drops, navigation and the use of night vision goggles, according to Cal Fire.

Residents in the Lake Berryessa area may see and hear low-flying helicopters and unmanned aircraft from late afternoon through evening and until midnight, Cal Fire said.

“While there may be a temporary increase in noise levels, Cal Fire is committed to minimizing disruption to surrounding communities,” the agency said in its statement.
