Cal fire crews battle 2 fires and prepare for hot, windy weather ahead

It's shaping up to be a busy week for area fire crews as forecasters expect heat and northerly winds.

LAST. COMING IN A LITTLE. BACK TO YOU. Very good, Tamara, thank you. AND THE LATEST FIRE BROKE OUT THIS NIGHT NEAR THE ALTAMONT PASS. NOT TOO FAR FROM THE FIRE WE HAD THIS WEEKEND. THE CORRAL FIRE. Yeah, that one's called the Patterson Fire. And it's burning just west of San Joaquin County. IT EXPLODED JUST BEFORE 5PM TONIGHT NEAR A WIND-OWNED POWER PLANT. FLAMES RUN THROUGH DRY GRASS. AND THIS IS A VIDEO FROM ONLY 30 MINUTES AFTER THE FIRE STARTED. CAL FIRE SAYS THE FIRE IS NOW 95 ACRES AND 75% CONTENT. As for the corral, the firefighters made progress today. THIS IS THE ONE IN SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY NEAR TRACY. THE FIRE ACTUALLY JUMPED OVER INTERSTATE 580 JUST SOUTH OF THE TRACY TRIANGLE OVER THE WEEKEND. AND THE HIGHWAY WAS CLOSED FOR MORE THAN 24 HOURS. THIS FIRE BURNED 14,000 ACRES. CAL FIRE AT 85% CONTENT. WE KNOW THAT AT LEAST ONE HOUSE IS DESTROYED. AND THE CAUSE HERE IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. Well, tonight Cal firefighters are preparing for the conditions ahead. THEY GET READY. KCRA THREE'S LEANNE DENYER JOINS US LIVE FROM THE NEWS ROOM WITH THEIR MESSAGE TO ALL. LEANNE. Yeah, it's been a busy week so far. CAL FIRE CREWS ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF WHAT APPEARS TO CONTINUE TO BE BUSY. They're still working on that corral fire. THE PATTERSON FIRE TODAY. AND OF COURSE, KEEP AN EYE ON THE WARM WEATHER COMING OUR WAY. CAL FIRE CREWS RESPOND TO PATTERSON PASS ROAD OUTSIDE TRACY MONDAY. KEVIN GRIFFITH KEEPING LIVESTOCK NEARBY. I'm just getting the cattle out of here. Yeah, to keep the cows away. AWAY FROM THE FIRE. AND WE CALLED THE NEIGHBORS AND CALLED MY PARENTS. And they had them all moved before we got here. And with this fire following Saturday's corral fire, he's thankful it's not much worse. Fortunately, they got this one out quickly, it didn't burn too much and they were able to get hold of it. 95 ACRES BURNED. BUT CAL FIRE SAYS THE EQUIPMENT IS ALREADY IN PLACE AT THE CORRAL. THE FIRE HELPED THEM. We had enough resources available to clean up the Corral fire. Um, where we were able to get a lot of our response here in a very short period of time, the travel time from the corral incident was about ten minutes, a relief as area fire crews prepare for the heat and northerly winds to come. It's definitely on our minds. WE WANT TO CONTINUE TO MAKE GOOD PROGRESS ON THE CORRAL FIRE. Um, obviously mop up that Patterson fire and just be vigilant and be prepared for whatever comes our way with this heat wave. YOU CAN SEE THAT CAL FIRE CREWS ARE WORKING ON THIS FIRE RIGHT NOW, AND IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE HOW WINDY IT IS. And you can see how these flames came up to the road here. The California firefighters hit this with water, but it's obvious how fast this fire was able to move. SINCE YOU CAN SEE THE LONG BLACK CHAR, WHAT WAS THIS FIELD? CAL FIRE SAYS THEY ARE COUNTING ON THE COMMUNITY TO ALREADY BE PREPARED FOR FIRE SEASON, WHEN THEY ENTER IT. ANOTHER SITUATION IN WHICH WE COULD HAVE HAD A LONG NIGHT. Cal Fire crews responded to Patterson Pass Road outside of Tracy on Monday for a grass fire. Nearly 100 acres burned. As of Monday evening, the fire was 75% contained. “(This fire was) another situation where we could have had a long night,” Cal Fire spokesman Josh Silveira said. Silveira said equipment parked near the Corral Fire deployed quickly, helping fire crews quickly understand the flames. “We had enough resources available to clean up the Corral Fire, where we were able to get a lot of our response here in a very short period of time,” he said. “The Corral incident is about ten minutes.” The quick response was a relief to Kevin Griffith.
