Bushfire causes major road closures in Washington County and evacuations are issued

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — A brush fire broke out in Washington County, forcing authorities to close roads from Springville to La Verkin and conduct evacuations, according to Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue.

The fire is located in the Rockville area, firefighters said, between Rockville and Springdale. The fire is affecting both directions of SR 9 – closed at mile marker 29 (Anasazi Way, Springdale) in Washington County.

“We also have the roads completely closed from Springdale towards La Verkin,” said Chief Ames, Hurricane Valley Fire.

The fire is currently estimated at 10 acres and growing, according to Utah Fire Info.

“Land and air responders are on their way. There are reports that structures are under threat and evacuations are underway. For the safety of the public and firefighters, please avoid the area,” Utah Fire Info said.

The cause of this fire remains under investigation.

“Please be considerate of the firefighters who are working to contain this fire. Resources from Hurricane Valley and Zion are on scene and more resources are coming from Color Country,” Hurricane Valley Fire posted on social media.
