CHICAGO — A shooting on a CTA bus killed a passenger and injured the driver overnight in Bronzeville on the city's south side.

According to Chicago police, the shooting happened in the 3400 block of South State Street, just a block from CPD headquarters, around 12:15 a.m. Monday. Police said the CTA driver reported a physical altercation in which two unknown men got into a physical altercation in the back of the bus, when one of the offenders pulled out a gun and shot the other man.

The driver then stopped the bus, police said, and the shooter fled in an unknown direction.

The victim, an unidentified man who police said was in his 20s, was shot in the chest and taken to an area hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The bus driver, meanwhile, suffered a gunshot wound to the right shoulder and was transported to an area hospital in good condition.

CTA President Dorval Carter Jr. released a statement Monday morning, saying, “It is absolutely reprehensible that a CTA bus driver was injured due to a discharged firearm on board a #29 bus from southbound State Street earlier this morning, following a disturbance between two parties.

“No one should experience this kind of violence, especially when they are simply carrying out their duties as a bus driver serving the public. Regardless of the circumstances, the CTA has zero tolerance for gun violence and will work with law enforcement to aggressively pursue those found responsible for these acts.

“CTA is also assisting the Chicago Police Department in its investigation of this matter, including reviewing all available surveillance footage.”

A heavy police presence was on scene early Monday morning. At one point, officers were seen working with firefighters to help the injured bus driver.

No one is in custody and Area One detectives are investigating.
