Burke County Sheriff Responds to Candidate Who Dropped Out of Race

WAYNESBORO, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Burke County Sheriff Alfonzo Williams released a statement regarding Lewis Blanchard's announcement that he is ending his campaign for sheriff on Thursday.

On Thursday, Sheriff Alfonzo Williams posted a response to Blanchard's news the day before on Facebook.

Blanchard said in a statement Wednesday night that the primary election results show strong support for the current sheriff's office and Sheriff Alfonzo Williams.

“I sincerely thank everyone who supported me throughout this campaign for their encouragement and contributions. Your support has been invaluable and I assure you that all funds donated to the primary campaign have been used responsibly,” Blanchard said.

He said in the statement that after seeing the results of the primary elections, it is not his time to run.

“Although my campaign is coming to an end, my commitment to service remains unwavering. I will continue to support efforts that ensure the safety, well-being and progress of our community. While this chapter is ending, I look forward to new opportunities to contribute in a positive way,” he said.

Blanchard announced his campaign for sheriff in September.

He retired from law enforcement in 2020, but returned to run for sheriff.

During his campaign, Blanchard said he believed Burke County could engage youth through the sheriff's office, and that he would work to create a Boys and Girls Club in the county if elected.

In Blanchard's campaign ad, he states:

“He believes that holding himself accountable is the first step in holding others accountable. His commitment to an open door policy aims to keep Burke County citizens well-informed, foster critical dialogue and build stronger relationships within the community.”
