Bryan's nanny sentenced to 40 years in prison for injuring infant

EAGLE STAFF REPORT

Berta Lopez-Vasquez was sentenced to 40 years in prison after seriously injuring a 5-month-old child, according to the Brazos County District Attorney's Office.

On January 19, 2022, the College Station Police Department responded to St. Joseph Hospital following a report of a 5-month-old child with “serious, non-accidental injuries,” according to the office of the prosecutor.

Upon arrival, police learned that the child had multiple skull fractures, contusions, a retinal hemorrhage with tremors and a severe brain hemorrhage. The child was immediately transported to Texas Children's Hospital, a Level 1 trauma center.

Police said the mother left the child in Lopez-Vasquez's care while she went to work. The mother told police she received a call from Lopez-Vasquez saying the child was not breathing normally. Lopez-Vasquez refused to take the child to the hospital or call an ambulance, according to police.

During an interview with investigators, officers said Lopez-Vasquez admitted to becoming frustrated when the baby wouldn't stop crying. Lopez-Vasquez admitted to police that she shook the baby and threw him against the wall, police said.

The infant likely would not have survived if he had not received treatment at St. Joseph and Texas Children's Hospital, the prosecutor's office said.

The victim, now almost 3 years old, continues to suffer from problems related to the abuse, the prosecutor's office said.
