Brown County woman sentenced to prison for 2023 crash that killed father, seriously injured son

(WFRV) – The woman who was charged with homicide after driving drunk and crashing into a vehicle that killed a man and left her son seriously injured was sentenced to prison Friday.

Paula Mejia, 49, was sentenced to eight years in prison and 14 years of extended supervision for drunken driving and murder of a man and serious injury to her son.

During sentencing, Mejia said she was sorry for her actions.

Back on April 12, 2023, authorities were dispatched to French Road for a report of a two-vehicle crash. Mejia was allegedly trapped in her vehicle and was kicked out.

The driver of the other vehicle was pronounced dead in the seat and his son was described as “crushed” between the dashboard and the seat.

Witnesses at the scene said Mejia was attending a work party and was seen drinking between 4:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Mejia was charged with homicide by intoxicated operation of a vehicle and injury caused by intoxicated operation of a vehicle. She pleaded no contest in April.
