Brother kills teenage sister, stages death as suicide | Pune News

Police have arrested an 18-year-old for allegedly murdering his teenage sister and presenting her death as a suicide. The police investigation revealed that the accused had strangled his 16-year-old sister to death following a fight during which she attempted to attack him with a knife.

Police said the deceased Safiya Suleman Ansari (16) was a resident of Vaiduvadi, Hadapsar. His elder brother Sharikh was arrested and according to police, he is pursuing a diploma in tourism after completing his studies up to HSC.

Safiya was a student at a local school, police said. The events occurred on June 17 around 2:30 a.m.

Sharikh reported her sister's death to the police as a suicide on the morning of June 17. Subsequently, the police registered a case of death pending investigation into the cause.

Inspector Mangal Modhave, investigating officer of the case, said, “Though the death was reported to us as suicide by hanging, the post-mortem suggested that she was strangulated to death. Further investigation revealed that the brother had murdered his sister. He was then arrested.

Another officer said: “Investigation suggests the two men had been arguing for some time. On the night of June 16-17, while family members were not at home, the siblings fought. It started with an argument over who would sleep on a particular bed. The sister tried to attack the brother with a kitchen knife, after which the brother is suspected of strangling her to death.

Police registered a murder case against Sharikh on Saturday and arrested him. He was taken into custody.
