Brooklyn woman questioned in deadly arson that killed roommate

A man was killed in an arson attack in Brooklyn at their apartment Friday night, and a woman seriously injured in the fire is now being questioned as a person of interest, sources familiar with the matter said.

Law enforcement sources said the tragic fire broke out at an apartment located at 371 Monroe Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant around 11:15 p.m. on May 24, drawing 12 fire units to the scene.

After firefighters brought the fire under control around 11:52 p.m., police learned of a 70-year-old man found unresponsive and unresponsive in a bedroom, as well as a 65-year-old woman suffering from smoke inhalation.

EMS pronounced man dead at scene; police withheld his identity, pending notification of his family. The woman, meanwhile, was rushed to Woodhull Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.

During the preliminary investigation, FDNY agents determined that the fire was deliberately set. Police believe the man and woman shared the apartment; their exact relationship has not yet been revealed.

The woman was later identified as a person of interest in the case. The charges against her await the results of the ongoing investigation.
