Brooklyn man convicted of fatal shooting of teen

A 30-year-old East New York resident was sentenced Tuesday to 25 years to life in prison for the shooting death of a 16-year-old in a shocking and unprovoked attack.

Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Phyllis Chu announced Ralief Bradford's sentence Tuesday. Bradford was previously convicted on March 28, 2024, during a jury trial of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

“Justin Richey was gunned down in a brazen and senseless manner by this defendant in broad daylight on a Sunday afternoon,” District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said after the sentencing. “Justin was killed just a day after his 16th birthday. I hope today's sentence brings some comfort to his heartbroken family and friends.

According to trial testimony, the incident occurred on July 15, 2018, at approximately 5:07 p.m., on Blake Avenue, between Euclid Avenue and Pine Street, in East New York.

Bradford, accompanied by two unapprehended individuals, approached Richey and falsely accused him of being a member of a rival gang. They assaulted him, after which Bradford brandished a gun and shot the teen three times in the torso. Richey collapsed and was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Bradford was arrested three days later on July 18, 2018.
