Brockton MA fire damages multiple businesses overnight – NBC Boston

Firefighters battled a massive fire overnight in Brockton, Massachusetts.

The flames spread to several businesses, but were almost out Thursday morning.

The fire broke out in a large building housing several businesses before spreading to a house behind it, which suffered minor damage in the form of melted siding.

The real damage was done to the building on Main Street near East Nilsson Street.

Firefighters are still trying to determine the cause.

Brockton Fire Chief Brian Nardelli said they were called to the scene around 1:30 a.m. The first firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke already coming from the ceiling of the structure.

No one had to be rescued. Two people were in the basement of the building but managed to escape on their own.

Nardelli said given the time the fire broke out and the warmer than normal temperatures, it was a difficult fire to fight.

“At first, when they came around the back of the building, they saw two people coming out of the basement,” the fire chief said. “It appears they may have been standing there, it's not clear at the moment. Heavy gunfire took place throughout the entire ceiling space.”

A soul food restaurant, convenience store and beauty salon all share the building, but none of them were open at the time.

No serious injuries were reported, according to firefighters. NBC10 Boston saw a woman being taken into an ambulance but she was alert and conscious.
