Bridgerton Showrunner Clarifies Benedict's Sexuality, Talks Francesca's Queer Storyline After Season 3 Finale

For example, when deciding to tell a queer story with Francesca, I spoke with Julia Quinn, I had her blessing. We talked about how in almost any book, there would be a part of the fandom that would be discouraged to see their favorite characters change. I don't think there's a book that wouldn't happen with, so for me, again, it comes back to story and character. Because Francesca’s book resonated [with me] the way it happened, it seemed like a natural adaptation.

Television: That's true. It feels like you're obviously putting the focus on the characters and also having future storylines in mind. I'm sure you're already working on season four. Are you also already planning future seasons beyond four?

JB: I am, yeah. I have a road map in mind of where we want to go, and Shonda and I have spoken privately about our plans for seasons beyond season four, if we're allowed to continue as we hope.

TV: It’s incredible. Benedict's story ends on a bit of an open note, and I know everyone wants to know more about Sophie. Is there anything you can tell us if we'll see her or not?

JB: Well, there are some hints at the end of this season, in episode eight, about where we're going with Benedict, and there's a lot more to come from his storyline. We'll continue to explore his fluidity and we'll continue to explore his relationship with what he wants in life. I think the most important moment for me with Benedict is when he's talking to Tilley Arnold and he just says, “Actually, I don't want anything serious,” and Tilley says that felt good for once to want something serious.
