Brevard County man arrested on DUI and reckless driving charges after crash on I-95 injured mother, baby

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA (FOX 35) – A Melbourne man is facing several charges after allegedly crashing into a car containing a couple and a baby, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

At approximately 11:16 p.m., the driver of a Lexus collided with the rear of a Toyota while traveling northbound on I-95. After the accident, the Toyota left the roadway and began overturning in the grass median. The Toyota then collided with a traffic sign.

A police officer at the scene noticed that the driver of the Lexus, Thomas Roberts, had red, watery, bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his breath.

During the investigation, the trooper determined that Roberts was driving nearly 100 mph, over 30 mph the posted speed limit.

The infant was airlifted to a local hospital and is in stable condition, troopers said. The woman suffered severe head trauma as well as a broken collarbone and leg, according to an accident report.
