A teenager who murdered Charlie Cosser, 17, at a party in Warnham, West Sussex, has been jailed for life.

Teenager Yura Varybrus will serve a minimum of 16 years in prison.

Cosser was stabbed three times in the chest in a marquee on a farm compound during a party attended by more than 100 people on July 23, 2023.

Varybrus was sentenced at Brighton Crown Court.

Judge Christine Henson KC previously lifted restrictions on the name of Varybrus, who was 16 at the time of the attack.

Varybrus was found guilty of murder and possession of a sharp article following a trial.

He stabbed Charlie, whom he did not know, when a fight broke out between them and two other boys on the dance floor.

Although the knife was never found, witnesses at the party told jurors during the trial that they saw Varybrus “soaked” in blood and heard him say “I stabbed someone.” after the attack.

In sentencing Varybrus on Wednesday, Judge Christine Henson KC said:

“Instead of what should have been a college end-of-year celebration, Charlie was stabbed…on a crowded dance floor.

“The impact of losing Charlie on his family and friends is immeasurable.”

Charlie's mother Tara Cosser said the impact of losing her “calm and relaxed” son would “last forever”.

She told the court the 17-year-old had started an apprenticeship as a gardener at a private school and was “loving his new adventure”.

He was also “so excited” to go on his first holiday with friends to Zante which he had saved up for after the party.

Describing her son as someone who “got along with everyone”, Ms Cosser said:

“We are sentenced to life, and Charlie has no life.

“No sentence will be long enough for my child's murderer. It won't bring Charlie back.”
