Brawl at Lake Berryessa in Napa County turns deadly, several injured

NAPA, Calif. (AP) — A man hospitalized with stabbings was arrested in connection with a weekend brawl at a popular Northern California lake that left one person shot and several others injured, officials said. officials announced Sunday.

Emergency personnel responded around 5:30 p.m. Saturday to reports that a fight had gotten out of control in the Oak Shores day-use area on the west shore of Lake Berryessa, according to the Napa County Sheriff's Office.

One man was fatally shot and at least two people were stabbed and flown to hospitals, sheriff's spokesman Henry Wofford said. He added that an unknown number of other people were treated in hospitals for injuries that were not life-threatening.

One of the stabbing victims was released Sunday morning, while the other remains hospitalized in unknown condition, Wofford told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

Later Sunday, sheriff's officials said in a statement that the man still in the hospital “was being held for his involvement in the shooting.” Officials provided no further details.

“For reasons of security of the facilities and the detectives detaining the person, the name of this person and the location of the hospital are being withheld,” deputies said in a brief news release Sunday.

Authorities have not said how many people were involved in the fight, which involved groups using broken bottles as weapons, Wofford said.

A deputy who arrived first reported the fighting continued as he performed CPR on the man who was shot, the Press Democrat reported.

On Sunday, detectives were interviewing witnesses to try to determine the motive and identify the suspects.

The lake located about 80 miles north of Sacramento is a recreational spot for camping, boating, water skiing, fishing, swimming and other activities.
