Boulder County Sheriff's Office updates communications plan after Flagstaff Road incident – Boulder Daily Camera

The Boulder County Sheriff's Office is updating its communications plan following problems encountered during a June 3 incident in which a man killed himself while negotiating with police on Flagstaff Road.

During this episode, Gross Dam Road was only accessible to local residents while Flagstaff Road was closed and drivers were required to bring identification to prove residency.

According to a press release, following a review of communications issues stemming from the June 3 incident in the 2100 block of Flagstaff Road, the Sheriff's Office has decided to implement several improvements.

In particular, they plan to create an email list specifically for key community communicators in Flagstaff and Lakeshore, who can help Boulder police “quickly disseminate information through channels that the Sheriff's Office does not have access to.” direct access,” according to the press release.

Additionally, BCSO gained the ability to send updates through the Gross Reservoir Expansion Project newsletter, reaching residents who have opted in to receive updates on this project.

According to the release, beyond these methods, officers will also continue to use various communication channels such as social media, press releases and emergency alerts through Everbridge as appropriate.

Additionally, BCSO informed residents that it has the authority to open Gross Dam Road if necessary.

For any extended Flagstaff Road closures, staff permitting, police will also attempt to position someone along the road to prevent residents from “having to turn around for (their) journey.”

BCSO also recommended community members sign up for emergency alerts at BoCoAlert.com.

“Our goal is to ensure timely and effective communication during any planned extended closure of Flagstaff Road,” the sheriff’s office statement said.

“We will do our best to share information as it develops, but if the Sheriff's Office believes an incident is likely to have minimal impact, we will not make a notification.”

According to the release, the purpose of the updated communications plan is to inform the community of extended closures having a significant impact.

This system allows Boulder County residents to be notified of emergency situations via phone calls, text messages and emails.
