Boise man sentenced to 5 years in prison for child pornography

Caryll Custer, 44, was sentenced to 63 months in prison for possessing child pornography and aiding its distribution, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

BOISE, Idaho — U.S. Attorney Josh Hurwit announced Thursday that Caryll Custer, 44, of Boise, was sentenced to five years and three months in federal prison for possession of child pornography and aiding in the distribution of illegal material.

Court records indicate that between June 17 and July 8, 2023, the Boise Police Department (BPD) received information that Custer was creating shareable electronic files of child pornography to distribute online, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Following a search of Custer's home, BPD officers and investigators from the Idaho Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force found thousands of files containing child pornography on his electronic devices.

“As this case shows, offenders who possess child pornography using peer-to-peer applications cannot escape justice,” Hurwit said. “Together with our law enforcement partners, we will spare no effort to track down these offenders, hold them accountable for their actions and recover financial compensation for the vulnerable children who have suffered.”

In addition to 63 months in federal prison, Custer will be on supervised release for 10 years following his prison sentence. He was ordered to pay $15,000 in restitution to the victims identified in the images and will be required to register as a sex offender.

“Online child exploitation creates a vicious cycle of abuse for all victims involved and the Boise Police Department takes these investigations very seriously,” said Tammany Brooks, Deputy Chief of the Boise Police Department.
