Bodycam of man killed by Austin police in San Paloma Apartments

Police said the officer who fired his weapon had been with the department for six years.

AUSTIN, Texas — Bodycam footage released Monday shows the moments leading up to the police shooting of a stabbing suspect in northeast Austin.

On May 27, the Austin Police Department (APD) was called to the San Paloma Apartments regarding a disturbance in which neighbors reported they could hear objects being thrown, as well as a woman screaming for help.

When APD arrived, a woman directed officers to the apartment where the disturbance was occurring. Having received no response, the officers forced their way into the apartment and went through a second, closed door. That's where they found Ensel Macalre-Urgelles, 48, on top of a woman, “actively stabbing” her.

APD said Officer Cody Schulz, who has been with the department for six years, shot Macalre-Urgelles. The suspect was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, police said the woman was also taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after being stabbed multiple times. She has since been released. Meanwhile, the relationship between the Macalre-Urgelles and the woman remains unclear at the moment. Police said no one else was injured in the incident.

Allison Frazier, who lives above where the shooting happened, said she thought the disturbance was something else.

“It’s really scary, especially as a student away from your parents,” Frazier said. “Really scary. We thought it was our cat that knocked things over last night, but it wasn't a cat.”

Schulz remains on administrative leave.
