Body of teenager found in St. Lucie River in Port St. Lucie

PORT ST. LUCIE — The body of a 16-year-old boy was found Tuesday afternoon in the St. Lucie River after he and two other youths, apparently fishing, attempted to cross the river, according to Port St. Lucie police.

Around 12:30 or 12:45 p.m., police were called about a possible drowning in an area called Twin Bridges on Southeast Port St. Lucie Boulevard, just east of Southeast Floresta Drive, said Sgt. Dominick Mesiti, a police spokesman. Mesiti said shortly before 4 p.m., a body was found submerged under the bridge.

The deceased was identified as Ja-Quon Shane Hosein Madaris of Port St. Lucie, Mesiti said.

Acting Police Chief Richard Del Toro said three teenagers were trying to cross the river. He said they were in shallow water, although the depth increases to about 10 to 12 feet. He added that the missing teenager could not swim or float.

Police said the three men “attempted to cross the perimeter of a mangrove area when the water became too deep for the 16-year-old, who submerged and was unable to resurface.”

Various law enforcement resources were mobilized to search for the teen, who was located by the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office dive team. He was found submerged under the bridge.

Mesiti said police used drones, a boat and a helicopter from the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office in the search.
