Body of teenager drowned in Grand Isle found | News

The body of a 13-year-old boy who drowned in Grand Isle was found Sunday while another child was hit by the surf and airlifted to a hospital, according to the Grand Isle Police Department.

The 13-year-old boy's body was found at midday just over 3 miles from where he was last seen in the water when he drowned Saturday, near the intersection of Louisiana Highway 1 and Hector Lane, Deputy Police Chief Walter Theriot Jr. said.

In another case, Grand Isle police pulled a 10-year-old girl from the water around the same time the body was discovered. The girl had a heartbeat but was not breathing, police said. Paramedics performed CPR and she was airlifted to a local hospital, Theriot said. His condition is unknown at this time.

The girl and her family were setting up crab traps when a wave knocked her over and she was unable to regain her footing, police said.

Theriot told WWL TV on Saturday that the 13-year-old boy fell underwater around 3 p.m. near a rock jetty that was “very dangerous” while “conditions were difficult.”

The Memorial Day weekend cases follow a series of beach drownings in recent years that may coincide with intensifying water currents, authorities said. Between April and June 2020 alone, Grand Isle police recorded six drownings and six rescues of people swept away by dangerous currents.
