Body of missing pensioner found by police and mountain rescue

A body, believed to be that of a man who went missing early this morning, has been found.

North Yorkshire Police (NYP) have confirmed they believe they have found the body of missing man Howard Gibbs from Askrigg in Wensleydale on Saturday (June 1).

They said the body was found near Mill Gill, Askrigg, by mountain rescue volunteers who were helping officers with their search.

Police confirmed Mr Gibbs' family had been informed and added there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

An NYP spokesperson said: “In the early hours of this morning, Saturday June 1, we launched an appeal for a missing man in his 60s from Askrigg in Wensleydale.

“Sadly, earlier today the body of a man was found near Mill Gill, near Askrigg, by volunteers from Mountain Rescue who were assisting officers with the search.

“Although formal identification has not yet taken place, we believe the man is missing Howard Gibbs.

“His family has been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time.

“Officers believe there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
