Human remains were found in the rafters of a Johnstown home on June 29.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — Human remains were recently found in a Johnstown apartment and have been identified as those of a man who went missing in December.

Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees confirmed at a news conference Friday morning that the body had been identified as Gregory Ira Rohn, 36, who was reported missing in December 2023.

The cause of death remains under investigation.

“There's a lot of tedious work to be done,” Lees said. “It will take several weeks to complete these tests.”

Lees added that the body was identified through digital imaging of the skull at Mercyhurst University. The remains are estimated to be five or six months old, which could pose a challenge for tests such as toxicology.

Johnstown Police Sergeant Adams said they had a list of people Rohn hung out with and wanted to talk to.

The “wellness check” was originally triggered by someone calling about a smell coming from the apartment, he added.

On June 29, Johnstown police were dispatched to a home in the 100 block of Adam Street for a welfare check. When they arrived, they found flies inside a window and noticed a foul odor.

During a search of the home, authorities said a body was wrapped in a tarp and was “very well hidden” in the crawl space of a third-floor bedroom.

Police reportedly searched the house several times before finding the body. Lees described the death as “highly suspicious.”
