Body of missing 4-year-old found

Hopkins police said they found the body of 4-year-old Waeys Ali Mohamed, the boy reported missing Sunday. Mohamed was located Monday afternoon.

According to Hubbard Station, KSTP, crews had blocked a portion of Minnehaha Creek near Chorus Apartments in the area of Blake Road North and Second Street Northeast Monday morning.

Hopkins Police Capt. Craig Kreiling said Mohamed is believed to have left on his own and died of an apparent drowning. He added that there is currently nothing suspicious about the boy's death and that it appears to have been a “horrible and tragic accident.”

An investigation is still underway.

As previously reported by KSTP's 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, Mohamed was last seen around 7:30 a.m. Sunday near the Chorus Apartments.

Police said the current in Minnehaha Creek was moving quickly, which was concerning. Crews searched the creek several times but didn't find the boy until Monday.

Police also said autistic children are attracted to water and like to crouch and hide.

Several area police and fire departments assisted in the search, including using a K-9 and a drone. Many community members volunteered for the search.
