Body of man found east of Athens identified

A man whose body was found a week ago in a wooded area near North Avenue in east Athens has been identified as a 62-year-old homeless man.

Timothy Scott Brown had been dead for at least a month when he was found June 2 in a wooded area near North Avenue, between the Georgia Division of Family Services and Advanced Auto Parts.

Authorities could not immediately identify the body due to advanced decomposition.

It was identified as Brown's Wednesday at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation lab in Decatur, where medical examiners are trying to determine the cause of death.

Brown had no known ties to the Athens community and his last known address was in Eatonton.
