Body missing since Friday found in Potomac River

Members of the Montgomery County Police Managed Search Operations Team believe they have located the body of a swimmer missing since May 24 Monday morning.

A body was found in the Potomac River around 8 a.m. Memorial Day in Sandy Landing, south of Great Falls, according to Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.

A few people started swimming from Virginia to Maryland when one of the swimmers was in distress. Authorities have been searching for the swimmer ever since.

On Sunday, a body stuck in the rocks was located through the use of sonar, Piringer said. By the time rescuers returned Monday to recover the body, a kayaker had reported seeing a body in the Potomac near the boat ramp near Old Angler's Inn, Piringer said.

“We believe it is the swimmer,” he said, adding that an investigation into his death was underway.
