Body found off Galway is that of fisherman

The body of a man found off the Galway coast in the early hours of Thursday morning has been identified.

John Burke, 51, from the island of Inishbofin, tragically died just a stone's throw from his native shores.

A rescue team located his remains on the coast of Cloonamore, in the northern part of the island.

He was known locally as a very experienced fisherman and crab farmer.

Gerry King, Connemara North Councillor, said: “I am very saddened to hear of the passing of John Burke.

“John was a well-known fisherman in the area, born in Inishbofin. He was also well known in the farming community for his sheep trade.

“If anyone needed help, John would be the first to respond. It's a great loss to his family and the community.” At 10.15pm on Wednesday, Malin Head Coastguard received a radio report that a fisherman was overdue and presumed missing off the coast of Inishbofin.

Mr Burke's boat is believed to have not returned to shore for two days. His boat was also found overturned near where his body was found.
