Body found in waters of Californian beach identified

A person was found unresponsive in the water off Moran Beach in Santa Cruz, according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.

A social media post says deputies, harbor patrol, state parks and firefighters responded Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

“Emergency personnel arrived on scene and began life-saving efforts, but the individual was pronounced deceased,” according to the sheriff’s office.

The Santa Cruz County Coroner's Office will investigate the cause of death.

The Santa Cruz Sheriff's Office told KSBW 8 the man was identified as Hans Materne, 45, of Atlanta, Georgia.

A spokesperson for the sheriff's office said the cause and manner of death are pending a toxicology report.

It is believed he entered the water to swim. No foul play is suspected, according to the sheriff's office.
