BNN follows case of Indonesian woman arrested in Japan for drug trafficking

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) said it was monitoring the arrest of several Indonesian citizens abroad for Drug trafficincluding the arrest of one Revi Cahya Sulihatun in Osaka, Japan, in early June.

“(We monitored the arrest) in Osaka as well,” BNN director Marthinus Hukom said. Tempo Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

Osaka District Prosecutors arrested Revi at Kansai International Airport on June 10 for carrying 1.5 kilograms of drugs that she had brought from Jakarta.

Revi's family and friends thought the young woman was missing when she arrived in Osaka. However, the Indonesian consulate received information about Revi's arrest on June 12, 2024. Her family was soon informed of Revi's condition by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Director of Citizen Protection Judha Nugraha.

Rumors have circulated about Revi's arrest. Some believed that Revi was apprehended because she was working without papers and using a tourist visa, as her visa listed an exit date of June 25, 2024. Judha Nugraha could not confirm the nature of Revi's arrest in Osaka, as local authorities are still investigating the case.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously announced that 165 Indonesian citizens were facing death threats abroad, with the majority of them arrested for drug trafficking. “Sometimes these people have no idea what kind of goods they are carrying and only find out that it is drugs when airports check them,” Judha said in Yogyakarta on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
