Bluffton Fire District Offers Summer Grilling Safety Tips

The Bluffton Fire District has offered some summer grilling safety tips to help keep everyone safe while grilling this summer.

As the grilling begins to take place at all those summer cookouts, firefighters want to make sure everyone stays safe this summer while cooking.

The Bluffton Township Fire District has offered several safety tips for grilling this summer, including making sure the grill is kept in a safe place.

“Make sure the tank is on a level surface, free of outdoor furniture, overhead trees or other potential fire hazards,” said Stephen Combs, public information officer for the Bluffton Township Fire District. “Always use and store propane tanks outdoors, in an upright position.”

Another tip is to make sure you inspect all hoses and connections if you are using a propane grill.

“Make sure all accessories, valves and caps on your propane tanks are functional and properly tightened,” Combs said.

It's also important, he added, to make sure when lighting the grill that you follow all of the manufacturer's lighting instructions.

Combs stressed the importance of keeping the lid open and being careful not to lean over the grill when lighting. He also advised never using starter fluid with propane grills.

“Stay alert and always have someone watch the flame,” Combs said. “Never leave a hot grill unattended.”

It's also important, he said, to turn off the grill when not in use, by turning off the grill burner controls and closing the tank valve.

“Be sure to keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill at all times to avoid possible burns,” he said.
