Blue 2 Fire in Ruidoso is 7,000 acres. Track wildfires

A fire that broke out near Ruidoso continues to spread.

On Friday, Albuquerque news station KOB-4 reported that lightning sparked two fires northwest of the city, which have since spread rapidly.

The Blue Fire and Blue 2 Fire were initially detected in the White Mountain Wilderness in the Lincoln National Forest on May 17, according to an incident report. It is managed by the US Forest Service.

The New Mexico Fish and Game Department had planned to open Lake Bonito to anglers on Saturday, May 25, to coincide with Memorial Day weekend. However, the lake, a reservoir located in the Sierra Blanca mountains northwest of Ruidoso, remained closed due to the fire.

As of 7 a.m. Wednesday, Blue 2 had burned more than 7,000 acres without containment. The damage caused by the fire is estimated at nearly $6 million.
