Blackfeet Nation's return helped Lily Gladstone forget about missing an Oscar – Music News

Lily Gladstone couldn't stay sad for long after missing out on an Oscar as her Blackfeet Nation tribe threw her an incredible homecoming party.

The Indian American actress was nominated for best actress for her role as Mollie Burkhart in Killers of the Flower Moon at the awards show in March, but lost to Emma Stone for Poor Things.

However, Lily told Empire that the meaning of the film, about a series of murders inflicted on the Osage people due to their oil wealth, had for people in her own Native American community in Montana.

“Well, I have to take this lovely trip home,” she said. “My tribe, the Blackfoot Nation, is part of a confederacy. And the whole confederacy came together for a Lily Gladstone Day.

“It was the greatest honor that anyone could get. The confederation decided together that they wanted to do it. It was a beautiful homecoming, and I could see my old home, the house that I 'was brought when I was a baby, right in front of me.'

The star went on to describe the moment as “absolutely one of the most emotional things that has ever happened in my life.”

The event organizers had given cardboard cutout Oscar statues to the children on the reserve and asked Lily if she minded having them on display. However, she says she didn't mind, just happy to be recognized for her work.

“No one was upset that it didn’t happen,” the 37-year-old explained. “I feel like when the Golden Globe came around (she won best actress there), a lot of people very far from the industry kind of thought it was the Oscars.

“It's about the fact that (the film was) awarded and it's historic, and it's just a really significant moment. So it doesn't matter whether or not I go home with that statue in my hand.”
