Black teen penalized for local haircut to appeal Barber Hills ISD

MONT BELVIEU, Texas – A Texas student sent to an alternative school because of his hairstyle plans to take his legal battle against Barber Hills ISD to court.

In February 2024, KPRC 2 digital reporter Moriah Ballard told us how a Chambers Country judge ruled in favor of the district on the first day of the trial after Darryl George and his family claimed the trial was against the CROWN Act.

Darryl and his family refused to cut his hair, which they say is always put away, neat for class.

The family ultimately filed suit against the district, resulting in a response from the superintendent that says they have every right to continue punishing the student.

After losing the case, Darryl had to maintain his in-school suspension, which he says deprives him of the usual school experience.

“It feels lonely when you’re the only one stuck in a room for a semester,” George said in February. “A whole year more. It makes you feel some kind of way because you can't be a kid like everyone else. You see everyone talking, laughing, you can't do that and it just puts pressure on your shoulders.

Darryl's mother met with their legal team earlier Thursday to discuss the appeal which will be filed LIVE on KPRC 2+ Now.

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.
