Black Louisiana teen graduates with 3.9 GPA despite being homeless

In all the countries — Meet Elijah Hogan, a 19-year-old African-American student from New Orleans, Louisiana, who graduated as valedictorian while homeless. Hogan attributes his success to the support he received from Covenant House and his school, Walter L. Cohen High School. He expressed his gratitude to his professors, fellow students and staff, saying, “Without them, I would not have been where I am today as valedictorian. »

With an impressive 3.93 GPA, Hogan shares the valedictorian title with another student in Walter L. Cohen High School's Class of 2024. During his graduation speech, he expressed his deep gratitude to his community.

Looking back on his high school journey, Hogan said he felt nervous at first, but eventually formed strong bonds. He deeply appreciates the guidance of Jana DeCoster, director of student activities at Cohen, and Jarkayla Cobb, his social worker at Covenant House.

DeCoster praised Hogan's gratitude, noting how rare it is for students to publicly thank their supporters. Cobb saw Hogan's growth, describing him as initially shy but now confident and articulate.

Hogan, a fan of Marvel and Stan Lee, enjoys reading non-fiction and creating art. He's about to start a new chapter at Xavier University of Louisiana, where he plans to major in graphic design.

For students interested in following his path, Hogan advises prioritizing education.

“There is a time and place where you can have fun, but also try to stay organized in some of your studies, because without your education you will not be able to overcome difficulties and meet the people who helped you. the way,” Hogan said.
