BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Birmingham man has been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison after being convicted of smuggling methamphetamine and heroin into the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility.

Adam Demond Andrews, 35, was sentenced to 132 months in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute controlled substances in February, Alabama U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona said in a statement.

On March 20, 2022, the Alabama Department of Corrections received reports that several individuals, including Andrews, were trespassing on state property in Donaldson. After being confronted by ADOC officers, the individuals dropped several bags of drugs on the ground and fled into the nearby woods. The bags contained 60.71 grams of a mixture containing a detectable amount of heroin, cocaine, fentanyl, and Delta-Nine-Tetrahydrocannabinol, as well as 1,406.1 grams of methamphetamine.

In addition, agents also recovered a pistol, ammunition, a magazine clip, pocket knives, a can of pepper spray, prescription medications used to treat opioid use disorder, marijuana, THC gummies, cell phones, cell phone chargers, cell phone cables, a mobile hotspot, memory cards, SIM cards, scales, lighters, cigarillos, cigar wrappers, shoes, jewelry and watches. Later that day, ADOC agents apprehended Andrews near the entrance to Donaldson.
