Binghamton man sentenced to 8 years in prison for drug possession

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A Binghamton man appeared in Broome County Court for sentencing Tuesday.

District Attorney Paul Battisti announced that John Wilson, 51, was sentenced for a second offense to eight years in New York State Prison, followed by three years of post-release supervision for third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

The conviction came after a jury trial that began April 1. A jury was empaneled and opening statements were delivered. Shortly before the first witness was called, Wilson pleaded guilty.

On January 26, 2023, the Broome County Special Investigations Unit executed a search warrant at a store located at 42 Clinton Street in the City of Binghamton. During the investigation, law enforcement located over one ounce of fentanyl and over one-eighth of an ounce of cocaine, as well as an additional digital scale. Wilson admitted to possessing these substances with the intent to sell.

“The Broome County Prosecutor’s Office is committed to prosecuting those who profit from the drug trade, ensuring that those who distribute illicit substances in our community face the full consequences of the law. This 8-year prison sentence sends a clear message that accountability will be met,” Battisti said.
