Bibb County Sheriff's Office Outreach Section Offers Youth Programs – 41NBC News

Outreach Section Offers Mentoring, Tutoring and Sports Programs to Keep Bibb County Youth Safe This Summer

MACON, Ga. (41NBC/WMGT) – As summer rolls around in central Georgia, the focus is on keeping our youth safe and how to keep them away from summer crime.

Lt. Reginald Thomas of the Bibb County Sheriff's Office Outreach Section said the sheriff's office is committed to nurturing the county's youth.

“If we promote the greatness of Bibb County, then the greatness of Bibb County will be seen,” he said. “We have great kids here.”

Thomas highlighted various factors contributing to rapid youth crime, citing communication at home, self-awareness, love and social media.

“We will show them their greatness,” he said.

The Outreach Section continues its efforts to provide mentoring, tutoring and other programs to youth during the summer months. One of the most popular initiatives is the Police Athletics and Activities League, known as PAL

“We have our annual PAL camp, a two-week co-ed basketball camp,” said William Square, juvenile delinquency prevention coordinator for the Bibb County Sheriff’s Outreach Unit. “We also just started the PAL basketball league in coordination with the Parks and Recreation Department.”

The outreach section also offers a response team to support parents of children who need additional assistance. Corporal Tamekia Nelson of the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Outreach Section says the programs and services are making a big impact.

“They know that their actions have consequences because they know they can come and talk to people and share their ideas with them,” she said. “If they don’t have anyone to talk to at home, we’re there.”
