BERNAMA – UITM IDENTIFYING STUDY PROGRAMS FOR COMPLETE CONVERSION TO TVET

SHAH ALAM, June 19 (Bernama) — The Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) is identifying several existing study programs for improvement to suit the field of technical and vocational education and training (TVET), said its board chairman, Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr. Raduan Che Rose.

He said this initiative, led by UiTM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) Prof Datin Dr Suzana Sulaiman, has so far identified about 40 programs with partial elements of TVET and technical programs that have the potential to be fully converted into TVET programs.

“This is part of UiTM’s efforts to strengthen the technical field, which aligns with the government’s drive to integrate TVET with the mainstream education system.

“We also hope to develop high-quality TVET courses for excellent school leavers from Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) to provide a skilled workforce that meets the needs of the country,” he told reporters after the university's Majlis Ibadah Korban dan Akikah here today.

Raduan said this initiative also aims to ensure that TVET is not seen as a second choice but rather an option equal to other academic fields for secondary school leavers, as envisaged by the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri, Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Earlier this month, Ahmad Zahid said Malaysia needs to make TVET a preferred choice for secondary school leavers, in line with the country's need to provide a more skilled or competent workforce to meet future demands of the labor market.

Meanwhile, Raduan, who is also the chairman of the National Teachers' Council (MPN), said UiTM had established a committee comprising experts from academia and the Ministry of Health to investigate why more than 10 000 students did not show up for SPM 2023.

He said this issue is a problem for the country and UiTM takes responsibility to find solutions in collaboration with relevant parties to ensure that the future of these students is not compromised.

On May 27, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry would carry out an intervention to track down candidates who had dropped out of school and give them the opportunity to re-enroll in the SPM.

Commenting on the problem of some tertiary students in the Klang Valley, including UiTM, allegedly taking risks by offering unauthorized taxi services or “prebet sapu” using personal vehicles without a service vehicle license Public Professional (PSV), Raduan said the university has advised students who work part-time to do so within the confines of the law.

“We receive reports, but they only concern a small number. Therefore, I take this opportunity to urge our students to operate legally by obtaining a PSV license to avoid being charged with legal offenses,” he said.
