Bengal student arrested for alleged links with Bangladeshi terror group

The Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police has arrested a student and detained five others from Panagarh area of ​​Paschim Bardhaman district for their alleged links with a Bangladesh-based terror group, said Sunday a senior officer.

The youth, a second-year computer science student, was arrested on Saturday evening from his Panagarh residence for his alleged links with the banned Islamist organization Shahadat-e al Hiqma of Bangladesh, he said.

Based on the information provided by him during interrogation, STF sleuths arrested five more people from Nababghat area in the same district, the officer said.

“The arrested person was trying to recruit youths from Paschim and Purba Bardhaman districts for the terror group. We are trying to find out who all were in contact with him,” the STF officer told PTI.

Among the other five were the brother of the arrested person and four others who were trying to join the terrorist group, he said.

The STF seized the student's laptop and some documents, including a diary, the police officer said.

Shahadat-e al Hiqma is a banned terrorist organization in Bangladesh.

In 2016, the NIA had arrested a student from Kanksa area of ​​the district for his alleged links with the ISI.
