Benfica-bound Irish teenager Jaden Umeh will be assessed in Portugal for his knee injury

Jaden Umeh from Cork City

Benfica-bound Irish teenager Jaden Umeh is due to travel to Portugal to assess a knee injury which has turned out to be more serious than initial prognosis.

The highly-rated Cork City player has agreed to join Benfica this summer after turning 16 in March and there is no indication the deal is in jeopardy due to the setback.

But the exciting striker's future employers want to help deal with the problem he encountered during a League of Ireland Premier Division match against Treaty United last month.

It appears Umeh has an issue with his cartilage that should rule him out until later in the fall.

The Crystal Palace starlet's younger brother Franco has long been identified as one of the country's most talented up-and-coming players.

Benfica have been on his trail for some time, aware of the post-Brexit reality which means he will not be able to move to England until he is 18. Serie A clubs have also been closely following his progress.

Despite his young age, Umeh broke into Tim Clancy's first team and has made 15 league appearances this season, nine of them coming off the bench.

He hit the target on the road against Wexford and Finn Harps.

Clancy recently confirmed that Umeh has indicated he will leave during the summer window, but he will begin the next phase of his life in recovery mode.
