BCA releases new information on fatal shooting that killed MPD officer

Officer Nick Kapinos fired his handgun and Officer Luke Kittock fired his service rifle, striking Mohammed, the BCA said.

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension released new information Thursday about what happened in the fatal shooting on Blaisdell Avenue in Minneapolis.

Officers initially responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment on Blaisdell Avenue. Officer Jamal Mitchell was first on scene, according to information released by the BCA.

On the radio, Mitchell said he saw two injured men in the street. One of those men has since been identified as suspected shooter Mustafa Mohammed.

Mitchell got out of his car and approached Mohammed who was sitting next to his car, BCA said.

When Mitchell asked Mohammed if he needed help, Mohammed pulled out a gun and shot Mitchell at point-blank range multiple times, according to the BCA.

As other police officers approached, Mohammed began shooting at them as well.

Officer Nick Kapinos fired his handgun and Officer Luke Kittock fired his service rifle, striking Mohammed, the BCA said.

Kittock was injured during an exchange of gunfire and was treated and released from the hospital. A Minneapolis firefighter was also treated for his injuries in the shooting.

A bystander who was shot remains in critical but stable condition, according to the BCA.

BCA personnel recovered a handgun with an extended cartridge at the scene. The agency is also looking into the homicide that occurred at the building at the request of MPD.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
