ELLERY – A battery may have caused a small fire at the Chautauqua County landfill.

According to county officials, a small fire was discovered by crews at the Ellery Landfill around 10:45 a.m. Monday in the landfill's debris cell.

Despite the windy conditions presenting a challenge, landfill staff quickly coordinated with local fire crews to remedy the situation. The combined efforts extinguished the fire in approximately one hour, and the fire was brought under control by 11:45 a.m. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Although the exact cause of the fire is unclear, Chautauqua County Landfill Manager Aaron Gustafson said an improperly disposed battery could be the source. Gustafson stressed the importance of proper waste disposal, saying, “We urge all landfill customers to be mindful of the waste they throw away. Prohibited materials, such as batteries, pose a significant fire risk.

County officials note that the landfill continues to prioritize safety and environmental responsibility. Additional measures and reminders on proper disposal practices are regularly communicated to ensure the continued well-being of the community and landfill operations.
