UPDATE: The deputy is in serious but stable condition. Here's what we know.

An East Baton Rouge sheriff's deputy was shot and a suspect was killed during a confrontation Thursday morning on Robertson Avenue, officials said.

“The deputy was transported to the hospital by another officer, prior to our arrival,” said Brad Harris, EMS spokesperson.

The MP's condition is currently unknown.

The suspect was fatally shot and the coroner's office was contacted, Harris said.

Deputies blocked off streets in a wide area around the scene. Robertson Avenue is closed from Hollywood Street to Denham Street.

Casey Rayborn Hicks, a sheriff's spokesperson, confirmed the deputy's shooting and said more information would be provided soon.

The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. at 5665 Robertson Avenue.

“Today we are saddened to learn that one of our sheriff’s deputies was shot and killed while on duty,” Mayor Sharon Weston Broome said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the MP and his family.

“We appreciate the rapid response of our emergency services. This incident highlights the daily risks our law enforcement officers face, and we are committed to fully supporting them and keeping them safe,” he said. -she declared.

“We are united throughout our parish, united in support of our law enforcement officers and our commitment to a safe East Baton Rouge Parish,” Broome said.
