Bartlett man sentenced to 19 years in prison for stabbing outside Elgin bar

Jason M. Ostrego

A Bartlett man accused of attempted murder and a hate crime related to a January 2022 stabbing outside an Elgin bar has pleaded guilty to the charges, according to ABC 7.

Jason M. Ostrego was sentenced to 19 years in prison for attempted murder of a black man outside the bar, ABC 7 reported.

Authorities say Ostrego, 31, was at a tavern in the 1000 block of North Liberty Street when he began arguing with a black customer and began yelling racial slurs at him.

Asked to leave the bar, Ostrego was escorted to the parking lot where he continued to shout racial slurs, authorities said. They say when the other customer went out to smoke a cigarette, the defendant stabbed him in the chest and punched another person in the face.

Ostrego must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before he can be released.
