Barnwell County woman charged with murder in death of pregnant teen

BARNWELL COUNTY, SC (WJBF) — A Barnwell County woman has been charged with murder in the death of pregnant 17-year-old Maylashia Hogg.

Jacqueline Reid, 62, was charged with two counts of murder Monday and booked into the Barnwell County Detention Center.

Maylashia Hogg, who was last seen alive around February 8, was reported missing six days later and found dead on February 18. She was nine months pregnant and expecting to give birth to a baby girl who has been named Londyn Charity.

According to the arrest warrant, a search of the defendant's home uncovered “forensic evidence of the crime.” The report states that Maylashia Hogg was stabbed multiple times with “a sharp weapon.” An autopsy determined Hogg's death was a homicide resulting from “multiple sharp weapon injuries and multiple stab wounds and incisions.”

Barnwell Police Chief Michael Butts released a statement Monday evening regarding the update in the case.

“I want to thank everyone who has worked tirelessly to assist in this investigation,” he said. “Please think of Maylashia’s loved ones. We must continue to care for each other, honor Maylashia and Londyn’s memory, and come together to heal.”

The Barnwell County Police Department requested assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to investigate the case, which will be prosecuted by the 2nd Circuit Solicitor's Office.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact SLED.
