Back-to-back shootings leave teen, 3 men injured in west Detroit

DETROIT – Two separate shootings minutes apart left a teenager and three adults injured. that of Detroit Western coast.

The first shooting occurred at 11 a.m. at West 7 Mile and Gilchrest Street, where two men in their 20s were injured..

Then, 10 minutes later, more shots were fired a few blocks from where a teenager and another man in his 20s were injured but not life-threatening at Fielding Street and Cambridge Avenue.

A total of four people were shot, with one of the men in critical condition.

Many residents told Local 4 they were taking shelter during the incidents.

“I heard about 10 gunshots, then I saw three or four people running,” Dale Coleman said.

The sound of gunfire shattered a quiet morning on Detroit's west side. The gunshots were so loud that Kamika Greer said she was able to hear them while sitting in a car at a gas station.

“I heard a whole bunch of gunshots go by,” Greer said. “I saw a whole group of people running across 7 Mile and I hurried up, got out of the car and ran towards the gas station.”

Authorities say one of the victims was a 14-year-old, but they say the two shootings are unrelated.

Police are investigating reports of groups of people fighting and shooting each other.

“From what I've seen, they're not connected,” Detroit Deputy Police Chief Jacqueline Pritchett said. “This investigation is fluid. It's wide open and we're still collecting information, but right now we can't say they're connected.

Gary Greer said he heard the gunshots and then saw people hit by the gunfire running in front of his house.

“Me and the gas station guy looked at it, but it looked like they were running down the street and started falling in front of my house,” Gary said.

Investigators are scouring the areas where the shootings took place looking for evidence.

But it looked like it was a shootout in progress, even in the street, far from the police tape where casts of shells lay on the sidewalk.
